After a heavy summer rain, I marveled at the beauty of nature as sunlight filtered through the scattered patches of dark clouds. This inspired me to embark on a project focused on aesthetics, exploring how I could translate raw inspiration into refined everyday objects.

Korea Hangi’s Properties:

Hanji, traditionally made in Korea from mulberry trees (known as ‘Dakjuk’), is celebrated for its exceptional durability and unique balance of toughness and flexibility. It is widely used as a crafting material across various fields, including architecture, crafts, and art, thanks to its remarkable ability to retain shape. Depending on the crafting method, Hanji allows for a variety of texture expressions, resulting in a high level of completeness in the finished product. In this regard, I chose Hanji as a raw material to best capture the fluffy, cotton-like texture of nature in creating a lighting shade.

1. Durability and flexibility
2. Preservability of shape
3. Endless craft techniques

Explore the inherent properties of the material:

To thoroughly explore the material, I focused on 'Hanji' crafts by reading several informative books and visiting 'Hanji' museums. This experience deepened my appreciation for the delicate textures and traditional techniques developed by the masters of Intangible Cultural Heritage known as "Hanji Jang." Although it took nearly two weeks to fully grasp the crafting methods, this process was both meaningful and essential for my material exploration.

1. Solidity and Durability
  • Testing Glue Concentration:
    • Applying glue to 25-mm square shapes in a mold.
    • Pasting together sheets of paper with varying textures.
    • Blending glue with porridge-like paper to assess the optimal thickness for toughness.
    • Comparing particle sizes: porridge-like paper, fluffy mass, and cut 25-mm square shapes.
  • Comparing Drying Times:
    • Observing drying times ranging from 1 to 3 days (considering environmental factors).
    • Drying paper under different conditions: humid vs. dry spots.

2. Aesthetic Consideration
  • Coloring Techniques:
    • Applying color after the paper has dried (noting the challenge of achieving even color due to absorption).

This design emphasizes the center of the shade, drawing attention to its focal point through carefully crafted patterns. The interplay of shapes and textures creates visual interest, enhancing the overall aesthetic while complementing the light's diffusion.
