Deer Chair

(2021)

Designing a chair poses a significant challenge for most designers. Similar to others in the field, I found myself grappling with contemplative thoughts, seeking to create a distinctive design for this chair. To avoid wavering by diverse inspirations, I established a set of consistent criteria for creating a chair suitable for daily use. Consequently, my goal was to incorporate essential guidelines: an ergonomic structure, aesthetic simplicity, and a manageable weight, even when crafted from natural white oak.

Design principles:

1. Ergonomic structure
2. Aesthetic simplicity
3. Manageable weight

Ergonomic structure:

I believe that an effective chair should be designed to mimic the contours of the human body, with its main purpose being to facilitate proper posture during prolonged daily use. Adhering to these principles, I have emphasized an ergonomic design that considers the natural physical interactions between the chair and a comfortable seating position.

Aesthetic angle:

I delve deeply into researching various standards from various angles, drawing insights from a wide range of sources, such as studying steady-selling products and creating one-on-one prototypes. From these experiments, I discovered aesthetic factors derived from these essential angles. Consequently, a deer chair’s design identity is developed by the fundamental traits of chairs.

Manageable weight:

In refining the aesthetic appeal of structural surfaces, I took into account two crucial factors: minimizing the consumption of wood material and streamlining the construction of the chair. By curbing the overall use of materials that consumers engage with daily, the chair becomes more user-friendly, even when crafted from authentic wood. I specifically designed the lower sections of the chair to create a robust yet straightforward frame.
